Preparing Doors & Windows
Skill Level: Easy
All You Need
Electric screwdriver, sander, chemical stripper, clothing (gloves and facemask), wire wool. Also recommended Black & Decker® Paint Stripper.
Why Prepare?
Through constant use, doors and windows need renovating more frequently. However, the more thorough your preparation, the longer-lasting and more attractive the finish.

To use a chemical stripper, make sure it is compatible with the wood Apply one coat, then wait 15-20 minutes
Strip using a metal-bladed paint stripper or a special stripping knife Once most of the paint has been removed, use wire wool dipped in stripper to get the last bits out of the corners Wash down with water or white spirit, depending on the instructions on your chemical paint stripper If you are sanding a panel frame door or window, start with the inner edges, then work towards the panels themselves. Next, work on the outer cross rails and outer edge of the door or window Use a fine grade of abrasive for a smooth finish. To achieve this smooth finish quickly, a sander is ideal. Don’t press down too hard, or you risk marking the wood.
