Safety: Electrical Appliances

  • When buying electrical appliances and power tools, ensure they have an approved quality and safety mark. A European Standard label is a good guide.
  • You should always check old equipment regularly, however small (e.g. Christmas tree lights, electric blankets).
  • Don’t overload a socket with plugs.
  • Make sure cables aren’t loose or frayed.
  • All plugs need the right fuse.
  • Do not leave loose cables as someone could trip.
  • Cables should be behind you as you work.
  • NEVER cut towards a cable. NEVER use electrical equipment in wet or damp conditions
Tip

A Residual Current Device (RCD) automatically disconnects the power supply if a tool malfunctions or a cable is cut.

  • Unplug tools or equipment before lifting, cleaning or adjusting.
  • ALWAYS turn the appliance or tool off at the socket if not working.
  • If in any doubt, get professional advice.
